After a three hour rain delay on Saturday, April 27th, Norwalk junior Tony Anania left no doubt that he is the state leader in the 1600 meter run at the 114th annual Drake Relays. Anania brought home the first Drake Relay gold medal in Norwalk history in a time of 4:06.54. Not only did he win the race by a wide margin, but he broke the Drake record in the event that was set in 2014. He also has the state’s 4th fastest time in that event ever! Anania started the relays on Thursday evening finishing with a personal best 9:07.79 for 5th place in the 3200 meter run. The junior helped anchor the distance medley relay on Friday morning to a 6th place finish in 3:34.22. The other three members of that team were freshman Logan Atherton, junior Kadan Borcherding-Johnson, and sophomore Xavier Bush. Tony then finished in 2nd place in the 800 meter run that afternoon. His time of 1:53.86 is now tops in Class 4A. Overall, Anania brought home 4 medals last week!
Norwalk also had strong performances at Drake from the 4×100 quartet of Nate Platner, Kadan Borcherding-Johnson, Logan Atherton, and Isaac Sutcliffe. They ran a time of 43.79. The 4×800 squad of Henry Groos, AJ Mosqueda, Cameron Thomas, and Grant Wallace ran 8:03.65 to finish in 17th place. The Warriors hit the track again on Tuesday, April 30th for the Little Hawkeye Conference Meet at Pella Christian.
